Third Statewide Public Safety Organization to Endorse Governor Hassan for Re-Election

Manchester—Citing her strong leadership on the issues that are critical to keeping our communities safe, the New Hampshire Police Association endorsed Maggie Hassan for re-election.

“With her consistent record of fighting to strengthen the safety of our people and communities, Governor Maggie Hassan is the clear choice on public safety, and we are proud to endorse her for re-election,” said John Yurcak, NHPA President. “Governor Hassan has worked across party lines to solve problems and protect the critical priorities that help us maintain New Hampshire’s status as one of the safest states in the nation. New Hampshire’s police officers know that we can always count on Governor Hassan to provide the support we need to do our jobs and protect the people of the Granite State.”

“Public safety is the most important responsibility of any government, and it is an honor to earn the support of the New Hampshire Police Association again this year,” said Governor Maggie Hassan. “Through our bipartisan budget, we’ve maintained drug task force teams, increased funding for mental health care, and added additional funds for alcohol and drug prevention programs, without a sales or income tax. I will continue working to bring together members of both parties to support the needs of law enforcement and keep our communities safe.”

“My opponent can’t be trusted to stand up for the priorities that are critical to the safety of our families and communities. His so-called ‘plan’ would blow a $90 million hole in the state’s budget for tax giveaways for big businesses, taking New Hampshire back to the devastating cuts that undermined public safety during the Bill O’Brien era,” added Governor Hassan.

This week, a police officer at Havenstein’s own event decried the “slash and burn” policies of the O’Brien era, which defunded critical public safety initiatives, including the Children in Need of Services (CHINS) program for at-risk youth. (Fosters, October 8, 2014).

Through her bipartisan budget, Governor Hassan fought to protect critical investments in public safety – without a sales or income tax. The Governor restored the CHINS program, invested in drug task force teams, funded the cold case unit, and launched Media Power Youth, a public-private initiative to increase media literacy and reduce and prevent youth violence.

The Governor also worked across party lines to strengthen community-based mental health services and pass a bipartisan Medicaid expansion plan that is providing coverage for mental health and substance use treatment to thousands of hard-working Granite Staters, strengthening the safety and well being of our communities.

The New Hampshire Police Association is the third statewide public safety organization to endorse Governor Hassan for re-election, joining the New Hampshire Troopers’ Association and Professional Fire Fighters of New Hampshire.
